Friday 5 Series 2021 – Cancelled
Due to the ongoing restrictions and uncertainty about when they will end, the Friday 5 committee have agreed that it won’t be possible to hold a series this year. Even when lockdown ends it is likely that races will be required to implement social distancing measures such as wave starts, for an unknown period of time. Unfortunately, this isn’t feasible for us given the size of the field, the size of the venues, road closure requirements, and the short timeframe we have available on a Friday evening. We look forward to returning when it’s possible to hold races under more normal conditions.

Friday 5 Series 2020 – Cancelled
The Friday 5 organising committee have come to the very hard decision to cancel this year’s series. No doubt you will be just as disappointed as us, but in the end it just became unavoidable. We considered postponing to later in the summer but there was a unanimous feeling that they would still get cancelled nearer the time. We wanted to be in a position to be able to give full refunds to those who have already entered the races, and the only way to ensure that was to cancel now before the host clubs incurred significant costs. The refunds process will take us a while, so please bear with us.

Entries to the 2020 Friday 5 series have been suspended while we wait to see how the coronavirus situation develops. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that this years races will go ahead on the advertised dates, and therefore it wouldn’t be right to keep taking entries. A lot will depend on what happens in the coming days and weeks. The organising committee are in discussions about what the transfer/refund policy will be if we are unable to go ahead on those dates. We will do as much as we can to reduce the impact on the clubs and runners, for whom we put on this series every year.

Trophies and series medals (for completing 4 or more races) will be handed out at the Ekiden Relay on Sunday 14th July.
A trophy presentation will take place at the end of the day, once the relay has finished, but the timing of this will depend on the finish time of the relay. Alteratively they can be collected from the Bury Pacers gazebo at any point during the day.
Series medals will be delivered in batches to each club (if present), along with a list of runners who should receive them. Anyone else should collect their medal from the Bury Pacers gazebo.
Unfortunately we cannot post trophies or medals because of the cost. If you or your club cannot collect them at Ekiden please contact us to arrange collection at an alternative event.

Friday 5 Junior series update
Last year we trialled a junior race series formed around the existing junior races that take place at Friday 5 events. Overall the series was a success, but there were a few areas where we felt we could improve things and therefore we are introducing a few small changes this year.
Age categories will now be based on school year i.e., age on 31st August 2018 (as per UKA rules). This has been introduced because last year we had a few runners who started the series as U9 and then moved up to U11 between races. As the U9 and U11 run different distances at some events, we need to ensure that this does not happen.
Online entries will now be available for all junior races, at no additional cost to the runner. Online entries will close at midnight on the Sunday before the race, as it is for the senior race. There will still be on the night entry available if you prefer.
The series score will now be the best 3 out of 6 races (rather than 4 out of 6). This has been done to give more juniors the chance of achieving the minimum number. Series memento’s will be given to all juniors who compete in at least 3 races.
And finally, this year there will also be a team competition! The team score will be the combined points total of the top 3 boys and top 3 girls. At the end of the series we will add together the 3 best scoring races for each team, to give the overall series score for that team. As with the main series this will be restricted to UKA affiliated clubs.

Collection of Friday 5 medals and trophies
Congratulations to all runners who won prizes and those who completed 4 or more races to receive a series medal. We hope that you enjoyed the events that you took part in.
A list of all prize winners will be published on the website once the results are finalised on Weds 11th July. Trophies and medals will be available for collection from the Framlingham Flyers gazebo at the Ekiden Relay being held this Sunday (15th July) at Woodbridge School.
If you belong to a club that is competing in the relays, your trophy/medal will be handed direct to your club for them to distribute.
If you didn’t run for a club or your club isn’t taking part on Sunday, please see Ricky Peacher at the Framlingham Flyers gazebo.
If neither of the above are suitable options please get in touch and we can try to work out the best way to get them to you.

We’re very pleased to announce the introduction of a junior race series supported by East of England Co-op. The races will be the existing junior races that take place before the Friday 5 races, but this year we will allocate scores based on the finish position in each age category. At the end of the series we will award trophies to the top 3 boys and top 3 girls in each age category (U9, U11, U13 and U15). Please help spread the word.

Dear Friday 5 competitor
Thank you for taking part in this year’s Friday 5 Series, we really hope you enjoyed it. The organising committee have already met to start preparations for next year’s series, and we’d like to hear any suggestions you may have.
Following feedback received over the course of this year’s events we’ve already agreed the following changes:
- The Senior category will be replaced with an Open category. All runners will accrue points based on where they finish in the Open category, resulting in an overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd male/female for the whole series. All other age categories will remain the same. This brings the age categories for the series into alignment with those used in the individual races.
- Trophies will be presented to the first three placed runners in each category.
- Runners who are eligible for awards in the Open category and an age category will receive both awards.
- Although everyone liked the idea of having a T-Shirt as the series memento, the logistics of organising T-Shirts in all the right sizes has proved impractical, so this will revert to being a medal in 2018.
- The 2018 series will consist of 6 races. The final score will be based on the best 4 out of 6 races, giving runners the option of skipping 2 races if they don’t want to do too many races in such a short time period.
- Runners will need to complete 4 races (not just enter 4 races) in order to receive the series medal.
If you have any other suggestions for how the series could be improved please use the following link to let us know.
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/YCM9JCK
We look forward to seeing you in 2018.
Kind Regards
Trevor Bunch

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM IPSWICH JAFFA RUNNING CLUB – Wednesday 10 May 2017
It is with regret that we must announce the cancellation of our Friday 5 fixture scheduled to take place on Friday 26th May 2017. We have not been able to satisfactorily meet the health and safety requirements to stage the event on the planned date. We have not taken this decision lightly but the safety of those participating is our primary concern. Full refunds will be provided to those who have entered.
The series rules will now revert to those applied in previous years in that you will need to complete 4 of the 5 events to qualify for the series memento.
Please accept our sincere apologies.
